CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

CARRIANNE LOOKED with interest around the homey bunker. They had finished their meal and were awaiting Sheshbazzar’s return. He had promised them answers but said there was something he needed to attend to first. Agent Raymond looked over at Nolan.

“Why do you think he lured us here?”

Nolan shrugged. “I wouldn’t call it ‘lured,’ but I imagine he’s just nervous. He had nothing to do with wounding Townes, so he’s probably scared for all the same reasons we are.”

“He wasn’t just ‘wounded.’ It was an assassination attempt,” said Raymond testily. “Let’s be clear and call things what they are. And we don’t know that he wasn’t involved.”

“Well, he’ll be back soon to tell us why we’re here, so why don’t we not speculate?”

“Let’s hope he gives answers. So far he’s raised more questions than he has given answers.” With that statement, Nolan was in complete agreement.

After a few moments, Sheshbazzar walked back into the room, and the occupants watched him uneasily.

“I think we’d all like to know why we’re here,” said Nolan, and Sheshbazzar nodded.

“Yes, you have earned that right. I will enlighten you now.” He sat on a floral sofa. “What would you like to know?”

Nolan looked at the others, surprised, before turning back to Sheshbazzar. “Well, I just assumed you’d tell us whatever is behind all of this. We have lots of questions, but I think it would simplify things if you just told your story from the beginning.”

“Tell us about the ship,” said Raymond. “What happened?”

Sheshbazzar sighed. “Very well. You have to understand that this does not come easily to me. I have spent a lifetime protecting these secrets at all costs. But I am moving into a different realm of my high calling, and therefore there are things that I am going to have to share. I will do so as necessity dictates, but realize that this does not come easily for me.”

Nolan nodded. “We understand. We—”

“Not all of us are so quick to accept your blind assurances that all is okay,” Raymond interrupted. “You know as well as I do that American lives were lost while on a UN-chartered mission at sea. Why don’t you start there? Stop skirting the real issue and tell us what’s going on. What is your connection to the Ake-Baylon and what was its cargo?”

Nolan, Carrianne, and Seldon looked at each other in confusion, but Sheshbazzar ignored them and nodded. “Very well. We’ll start there. The Ake-Baylon is, of course, my ship, as your government agents have discovered by now. I own it and dozens of others, all purchased through a network of business conglomerates. We use them—”

“Why are they purchased in such a shady way,” interrupted Raymond, “if all of your dealings are on the level?”

Sheshbazzar looked confused. “Shady? On the level? I do not understand.”

Nolan smiled and translated. “He means that if your business ventures are without any ill intent, like criminal activities, then why do you go to such extraordinary measures to keep them secret?”

“Ah, I see now.
